This is divided into Art in Parks, Neighborhood Art, AAOSE and Public Art Administration. VII. Old Business a. Art in the Parks: Tahira and Labh Hira Park: Hive appeal by Kelly Tompkins Kedrowski and Pippin: Commission recommends to City Council to recommend extend contract to Kelly Tompkins for purchase of “Hive Appeal.” Brian Phillips recommends outreach to the Hira family. He also recommends presentation of choice of artwork to City Council at an upcoming meeting. b. Decommissioned Fire Hydrants: i. Mutt-mitt locations from map last month meeting was reviewed. ii. Prior hydrants have not weathered well. Hauswirth recommends we table the process until we understand how to make this process work better. c. Problem Pedestals / “Historic Brick Pillars.” i. Valerie Stallbaumer and 144 others presented information in a handout form. ii. Discussion about value of keeping pedestals all in place. Option of compromise discussed. Discussion of preserving the items in some way. iii. Valerie has found a company that can move the pedestals which she says was low cost (<$6000). PAC had been informed that the estimate for moving the pedestals was $16000 by public works. Such a process would involve public bidding process which would depend on City Rules. Public Works felt the job would be complex as the pillars are buried deep in the ground. iv. Subterranean pipes likely prevent moving the items. VIII. New Business a. Buchanan Drive Sculpture i. Bonnie Dix lives on Buchanan Drive. The art placed was not the neighborhood’s first, second or third choice. “THE ART HAS BECOME RUSTY AND TACKY.” ii. She expresses desire for more naturalistic art. She wonders if it could be switched with something else. One neighbor agrees and she has not spoken to other neighbors. iii. Hauswirth mentioned the Commission had discussed not wanting to move item unless there is a consensus about this. iv. Kedrowski mentioned that this art was placed when there were no rules requiring neighborhood get one of their choices. The request for art came in 2017 and art was placed in 2018. v. Movement would cost $ for Commission. It could be stored. The piece could be repaired by the artist. There is concern expressed about this setting a precedent that will cost the program going forward. This should be viewed as correction of mistake. b. Transformer Wrap. i. 4 options presented. This is located on Main Street. There is no room to screen this transformer given location close to street. The transformer wraps were identified as an option by Electric Commission. The company that does the wraps is very good. The wraps are holding up well. Skyler Wade piece was chosen. Brian will look into other exactly the same size transformer in city inventory that could potentially be wrapped by 2nd choice by Sarah Balvanz. c. AMES: meeting with Chris Crippen and Barbara Neal and Brian Phillips outlined including next steps d. Theresa Stromberg Murphy talked to David Faux at Heuss Printing. Figure she got was $8-15/calendar. She was told if art is selected by September 2024 calendar could be printed in time. A multi-staged contest would be an option which would allow printer to start work on Calendar. Kyle recommended we table the item in interest of more information. e. f. ASH Trees. Chainsaw sculpture is in Brookside Park. There may not be any ASH tree options available. IX. Motion to Adjourn Stromberg Murphy/ Briest.
