I. CALL TO ORDER: 1734 by Kyle Hauswirth
II. Consent Agenda: Approval. Motion by Karen Kedrowski and seconded by Janice
Reutter
a. Approval of June 6, 2023 Minutes:
b. Treasurer’s Report: Not discussed
III. Subcommittees:
a. Outreach: Nothing to report
b. Public relations: Identified goals including to regain access to social media, gaining 750
followers of website as a goal and creating monthly social media posts such as “art of
the month” to drive traffic towards website.
c. Collection management: Update use of Geographic Information System system
IV. Public Forum: No members of the public were present.
V. Chair’s Report: Chair Hauswirth reported on the Garden Art Fair with overall evaluation that
our spot was decent and that the event itself was a good event. There was a suggestion that our
participation would be enhanced if we created a banner for our tent with the words: “Ames
Public Art Commission.” The next event that PAC will participate in will be the Octagon Art Fair
on September 23, 2023.
VI. PAC Liaison Report: Brian Phillips reported that the Ice Arena Mural artist arrived in Ames
on August 1, 2023 to complete the mural. He reported that City Council recommended removal
of the problem pedestals including request to preserve terra cotta inserts. He reported that Hira
Park art installation request for applications will be issued in the near future.
VII. Old Business
a. Art in the Park: Hira Park call for artists will be issued soon.
b. Fire Hydrant Project: There is ongoing discussion as to whether there is a map of current
“poop bag stations” within Ames Parks and Recreation Department so that we could
determine where to place future painted hydrants.
c. Ice Rink Mural is underway
d. PAC booth items: Discussion of creation of stickers for water bottles, etc. Perhaps a
contest could be initiated to create a PAC sticker(s).
e. Problem Pedestals: There was discussion of public feedback (some negative) about
PAC proposal to remove pedestals.
VII. New Business:
a. Electric Transformer Wrapping: PAC has been approached by the Ames Electric
Department about sponsoring an artistic wrap for a new electric transformer. The Electric
Department feels that wrapping the transformer would be more attractive than hiding it.
There are some of the old transformer wrap designs that were considered as “runner-
ups” in PAC records and there was discussion about the possibility of creating a new
contest. The question came up as to whether the Ames Electric Department would
participate in paying for this. The cost is $1000 per wrap.
b. Roundabout Subcommittee: This was not discussed as key members of the group
working on this item were not present.
c. AMES subcommittee: There was discussion of a memo created by Erica Briest and Joe
Merchant regarding the goals and ideas behind this subcommittee. The memo will be
included in the next board meeting packet. After this we will anticipate setting up a
meeting to discuss ways forward with Cyride if possible.
d. Vacancies: There is an ongoing need for recruitment. There are individuals who are not
attending meetings currently. There was a motion by Erica Briest and second by Karen
Kedrowski to cancel the memberships in PAC of those habitually not attending at the
next meeting (this is consistent with PAC bylaws) although the consensus at the 8/1/23
meeting was to approach these members once more before taking this step.
VIII Adjourn at 1824 Motion by Reutter. Second by Stromberg
