HomeMy WebLinkAbout~Master - PAC Meeting Minutes 06/06/23Public Art Commission Meeting Minutes - 6/6/2023 Ames City Hall, Room 135 I) Called to order: 5:30 Attendees: Candace Zwank, Erica Briest, Kyle Hauswirth, Janice Reutter, Michael Pippen, Joe Merchant II) Erica called motion to approve consent agenda. Janice Reutter seconded. Motion passes unanimously. Kyle announces that Mohammad Rashid is resigning as he is moving out of Ames. Kyle asked for volunteers to join the Public Relations Committee to fill Mohammad’s position. Michael Pippen volunteered. III) Commission Committee’s Reports and Comments a. Erica spoke for Outreach Committee meeting. i. Met by Zoom. Goals include: 1) More outreach to families with children. 2) Clean out closet – Jenga and Cornhole. Play cornhole and give Jenga as prizes ii. Erica explained AAOSE process to the Outreach Committee members. b. Kyle spoke about Public Relations Committee -he is the only member so he didn’t “meet”. He will meet with new committee member Michael within the next month. c. Theresa spoke about Collections Management – no meeting was scheduled – she will schedule a meeting this month. IV) No Public Guests V) Chair’s Report a. Art Walk was successful, weather notwithstanding. Kyle brought a TV to scroll through the sculptures. b. The PAC committee is short 4 members. Encourage your friends and family to apply on line c. Reiman Gardens Art Fair is next Month – see email and think about how to schedule. VI) City Liaison was not present. VII) Old Business a. How to enjoy public art in Ames – see mock-up in City Side. Kyle will continue to ask as a liaison with the City. b. Decommissioned Fire Hydrants: Locations of mutt mitts – Daley Park, Lloyd Kurtz, Inis Grove – Michael has volunteered to count the mutt mitts at Inis Grove. Maybe Carr Park and Ada Hayden. VIII) New Business a. Ice Arena Mural – on Council’s agenda for June 13 b. Roundabout Subcommittee: Rashad is resigning – Candace is extending an invitation for people to join the subcommittee. She is setting up a subcommittee in the next week or so. She would like help calling all the tenants in the research park to see if they want to donate to the project. She is working with Brian about processes. City would about draft the call for artists. Should allow Public Works to comment in case they have concerns. c. AMES (Accessible Map – Envisioning Sculptures): Joe and Erica rode the Red Route. Plenty of space around the stops for sculptures. You might want to put a sculpture some places where there aren’t shelters as there are some busy places without shelters. Talked about having a theme for each route – a unifying idea for the artist. Talked about bidding entire routes for unification of art. Erica thinks that ISU bus stops should be included in the wayfinding art. Talking about sculptures the size of the dragons outside City Hall. Candace asked if this project would include the “ease bus”. Maybe an “ease” pick-up spot. Subcommittee is too large. Kyle will remove himself from the committee. Theresa will also remove herself from the committee. Action item – framework of proposal for CyRide d. PAC Booth items – crayons were popular at Art Walk e. Pedestal Problem – proposal going to Council on June 13. Historic Preservation Commission has a meeting on June 12 and it will be on their agenda to provide information to council. f. Discussion of Next Project: - confirmed public interest in photo contest – make a calendar? Just post on social media. For the Good of the Order – two hour shifts (with flexibility) for the Garden Art Fair July 9. Lunches will be brought to the booth - $13 a piece if you are interested (lunch not paid for by PAC). Consensus is to bring your own food as needed. Set up is that morning or Saturday afternoon from 5 to 7. Decided to do morning set-up. Kyle – he will continue sending out a summary/action items for meeting. X. Janice moves we adjourn. Joe seconds. Passes unanimously. Adjourn at 6:43 pm.
