PUBLIC ART COMMISSION, CITY OF AMES
MEETING MINUTES – April 4th, 2023
AMES CITY HALL, ROOM 135
Members Present: Erica Briest, Kyle Hauswirth, Theresa Stromberg-Murphy, Michael Pippiin, Candace
Zwank, Emily Simmons, Joseph Merchant, Mohammad Rashid, Karen Kedrowski,

o Thank everyone for the honor of being the Chair of PAC
o It has been a wonderful learning and growing experience
• City Liaison’s Comments/Updates
o Carly is working on getting photo contest put together for the Parks and Rec Golf
Clubhouse.
o 2 Pieces that the Commission purchased from the Black Arts & Music Festival in 2020
are also being framed and set to be displayed in City Hall.
o Priscilla Sage pieces have been extremely frustrating, back and forth with the frame
shop has been frustrating. The fabric pieces will be put in more display boxes than
frames. Frame shop has not been responsive, and it is difficult to get the PO until we
get more information.
• Status Updates-
o Art in the Parks-
▪ Call for Artists has been drafted and is available in the packet.
▪ Discussion about the Call for Artists
• Lifespan of Art
• Question on construction materials
▪ Motion to Approve the Draft Call for Artists- Merchant

▪ “What to do with Public Art”
• Packet that will be re-worked for presentation at next meeting.
▪ Decommissioned Fire Hydrants
• Project to utilize the Decommissioned Fire Hydrants was a success, and
putting them in the dog parks and at dog bag stations was popular.
• Question was raised if the project should be limited to 5 years instead of
in perpetuity.
• I move at an annual budget of $1200 is placed aside for fire hydrants.
Priority will be given to repainting any existing fire hydrants that need to
be updated due to age, with new hydrants being placed in parks around
Ames as dog bag stations. In the event that there aren’t enough new
hydrants or hydrants that need replaced to use up the entire budget,
the amount remaining will roll forward to the next year- Angie DeWaard

o Ice Mural
▪ Met with group from City, Ice Arena, Brian and Angie.
▪ Winners have been selected- Emma and Josh
▪ Photos have been passed around, but this is still subject to contracts.
▪ Arena Ice is uneven, so this summer they are going to melt all the ice and level
it, and they are going to do the painting while the ice is melting, as the Arena
won’t be used.
o Roundabout Subcommittee
▪ Monolith was destroyed by a Drunk Driver in the Largest roundabout by the ISU
Research Park.
▪ No direct contacts from the Companies in the Research Park, but the directory
was passed on, and the subcommittee hasn’t met yet to move forward.
o AMES-
▪ Incorporate art in a productive way in a relation to Public Transit.
▪ Improve accessibility for kids or people with disabilities or language barriers.
o Proposal from Otocast to create AAOSE audio guide.
▪ Otocast does interviews with artists and creates an audio guide for AAOSE
Sculptures.
▪ Historically there was no utilization when PAC has purchased in the past.
▪ Motion- Table Discussion of Otocast until either GIS Database is up and
accessible to public, or Glowforge laser cutter is operational- whichever comes

o Problem Pedestals-
▪ There has been no word from Public Works on how much it would cost to
remove the pedestals, and we cannot go to Council with this plan until we know
the cost.
