(a) PAC discussed classifying the ice arena as a park so money could be shuffled around to provide funding from the Art in the Parks budget line. The Ice arena is operated by the parks and recreation department of the City of Ames (jointly with ISU). (b) Awaiting input from Taylor, as she is looking at project internally. B) Priscilla Sage Pieces in City Auditorium (10min) 1) Message received on City website from Tom Jackson originally inquiring about lighting for pieces. 2) No information found in archives, so inquiries were made by Ol ivia and Aspen. No information from either, but Aspen received information from Auditorium management. Pieces are beyond repair. 3) Olivia was getting ready to write up deaccession request for all five pieces in January and they are all gone? Olivia and Brian are trying to track them down. 4) Carly sent deaccession notice on Feb. 16, 2022 5) Tom Jackson attended meeting on March 2, 2022 (a) Priscilla Sage to be contacted to review state of pieces. If they can/should be repaired, we will look for alternate locations for hanging (b) Brian to review city auditorium paperwork for verbiage on renters removing artwork (c) We are looking at internal processes on how to improve information on how to care for pieces. If pieces need unique care long-term, we need to look at either maintaining them as a commission or hiring individuals (within City or outside) to care for them. We will want to consider this when purchasing new pieces. 6) Artist that Priscilla Sage recommended to repair the pieces has not responded to our requests for repair estimates, so outside estimates were sought to determine if the pieces will be repaired or deaccessioned. 7) PAC voted to repair and encase the piece BUT must make sure it will still fit in the auditorium & is acceptable to Town & Gown (need an update) C) Decommissioned Fire Hydrants (Angie DeWaard) (5 min) 1) Winners have been selected and are awaiting their hydrants. 2) Hydrants need sandblasting due to corrosion. PAC needs to take on this cost. (Did I hear a motion?) 3) Hydrants will be dropped off at winners’ homes to be painted and then picked up to be brought back in and properly sealed before being installed at the Dog Park. D) Solar lighting of existing sculptures (Sahar) (10 min) 1) Bid is in for about $80,000 to light up all the sculptures around Ames in the PAC inventory. This amount means it requires much higher approval and calls for bids than just PAC getting an estimate. Do we want to pursue this idea further? E) Damaged art (everyone; calmly)(15 min) 1) Spikey Smooth: repairs complete 2) Monolith will be deaccessioned. How are we going to replace the sculpture is the thing that remains open for discussion. In August, PAC approved proceeding with some type of replacement art in this location. F) Discussion of next project (10 min) 1) These are just some ideas that have come up (a) Adopt-an-Intersection (Art in the center of the intersection) (b) Decals for AAOSE (pending Main Street approval) (c) Mural contest in Ames Parks (d) Possible tattoo festival tie-in for “Modern Art Festival” (e) Solar lighting for sculptures VIII) For the Good of the Order – Group Discussion / New Ideas (5 min) IX) Adjournment (Erica Briest) Next Scheduled PAC Meeting: Tuesday, October 4, 2022 at 5:30 pm Upcoming/Recent Dates of Note: • September is Art Month! • September 25th is the Octagon Arts Festival!
