VII) New and Continuing Business – Action Needed
A) Meeting Time Changes (10 min)
1) Council has decided not to take action on this item. As such, moving to Zoom hybrid is not an
option at this time.
2) Several committee members either cannot make weekday meetings work at all due to life changes,
or have to leave after a certain amount of time. All other commissions meet after work hours, and
changing times would allow for more equity in potential candidates for commission.
3) New meeting times will be on first Tuesdays of month at 5:30 pm.
(a) Meetings in January/March/May/July/September/November will be for officers and a
representative from each committee (as well as anyone else who would like to come). Quorum
can be reached at 4 attendees.
(b) Meetings in February/April/June/August/October/December will be for the entire commission.
Quorum can be reached at 8 attendees (if number remains at 14 or 15).
4) New times will start April 1, 2022 with new board members. Can be published in documentation
for new candidates.
B) Ice Arena Mural request (5 min)
1) Taylor Bassett, ice arena manager, has requested a mural potentially be put in the landing of the
stairs (see photos at end of agenda). Does not have a budget currently.
(a) PAC discussed trying to partner with the ice arena/Parks & Rec on fundraising to pay for this
mural. Angie has sent an email to Taylor inquiring about this possibility.
C) Museum Quality Lighting for Auditorium Stairwell (5 min)
1) Message received on City website from Tom Jackson. In summary – Ames Town & Gown Chamber
Music Association purchased two works by Priscilla Sage for the lobby of Ames City Auditorium in
2009, and PAC purchased museum-quality lighting for them. Artist loved the display and donated
an additional piece for the stairwell. “No lighting has ever been installed and that has been a
disappointment to both the artist and the patrons.”
2) Dropbox folder does not have minutes, funding requests, or budget information going back that far.
3) The piece appears damaged when reviewed by Coll Mgmt. Angie has asked Brian for contact info
for Priscilla Sage, and whether or not we could pull the piece down in the interim to prevent further
damage. Artist will need to give information on if the piece is salvageable, if she’d like to repair,
etc. This is all considered first steps before discussing purchasing lighting. Olivia is going to check
with Kerry for background information, and Aspen will check with ISU Museum as well.
D) Dahlquist Light features downtown
1) These are damaged. Per Main Street, they would like us to either fix, remove, or replace them.
2) Updated request as of 11/18/21 – they would like us to deaccession them and have the pavers in
the remaining spots replaced as part of the Main Street paver project. No replacement sculptures
would be requested at this time.
3) There are eight lights. Quote from artist to repair is $99,675 - $114,675.
4) This has not been an emergent issue for PAC, but one we kept on agenda. With the Paver project
moving forward, this has increased the urgency.
5) Action options:
(a) Remove lights per Main Street Request. No replacements needed at this time, but can be
considered in the future.
(b) Fund the repair of all eight pieces out of PAC budget. (~$100,000)
(c) Fund the repair of one light at a time out of PAC budget.
(d) Postpone this decision further.
VIII) For the Good of the Order – Group Discussion / New Ideas (5 min)
