Community Inclusiveness Task Discussion
Pete provided a document outlining some of the events and activities that support
inclusivity. He also noted that Destination Iowa State was an event where there could be a
closer connection to the community – making it a welcome not only to the University, but to
the community as a whole.
Warren noted that in his view, there seem to be more students Downtown at events such
as the Farmers Market. Hosting such events may be a way to better connect students to
the community. The Homecoming parade downtown was also referenced as a connection-
building event.
Evelyn shared that the reactions she received were more related to the overall City
activities, not necessarily from a student perspective. She shared human services as an
example of the kind of activity that assists in making the community more inclusive.
Karin mentioned the Symposium on Building Inclusive Organizations being planned for late
this month. Pete mentioned the meetings being held at the Student Government’s request
to explain and discuss the University budget, dining, housing, and other topics.
Warren indicated that until we get some data from the community indicating what is
lacking, it is a hard question to answer with anecdotes. Pete summarized that what we are
looking to get is for students to be good citizens. He didn’t have a sense of whether that is
better, worse, or the same as it has been. He thought it might be worthwhile for the City to
endorse the University’s Principles of Community as well.
Ian Steenhoek arrived at 6:35 p.m.
Brian noted that if the group does not feel there is any further progress to be made, the
Commission could report back to the Council with a summary of what has been discussed
and ask if the Council has further direction.
Ian noted he spoke with others about ideas. Ames Pridefest, the Farmer’s Market, and the
Library as welcoming areas. He also mentioned the ISU Lectures series and ISCORE. The
ISU Alert is an example of something that students feel is confining to just campus, but not
about things beyond campus.
Ian mentioned lighting around Welch, Lincoln Way, and Campus Avenue as a need. He
said cat-calling of women was a problem. Some products and services, such as make-up,
food, and hair care services, were not as available to people of all ethnicities. ISU and
Ames community members could do more to incorporate preferred pronouns into emails.
Warren left the meeting at 6:53 p.m.
Karin offered to start on a written summary of the Commission’s work on this topic, which
could then be communicated to the City Council. This would include the ideas discussed in
the past several meetings. Karin indicated she would try to get it together next week, and
then can send it around for suggested edits. Karin will take the feedback and produce a
final copy. The Commission will aim for the second City Council meeting in November, and
will cancel the November regular meeting.
Commissioner Comments
Ian talked about the UROC group, which is a constituency of Student Government that
represents off-campus students. There is a fundraiser being held at Buffalo Wild Wings in
the next week. The organization is intended to be a gathering point for students who live
off campus to share their issues.
Eric mentioned he would be done with his term on the Commission in January. Ames Main
Street will identify a new person to serve.
Adjourn
Pete moved the meeting be adjourned. The meeting adjourned at 7:28 p.m.
