Members present were Eric Abrams, Evelyn Beavers, Ian Steenhoek, and Tom Lindsley. Pete Englin, Meghana Akella, and Warren Madden, were not present. Staff liaison Tasheik Kerr was present. The Commissioners welcomed Ian Steenhoek, ISU Student Government Appointee, to the Commission. Approval of Minutes: It was moved by Eric, seconded by Tom, to approve the minutes of the April 23, 2018, meeting. Motion carried unanimously. Public Forum No one was present for Public Forum. Community Inclusiveness Task Discussion Karin announced she was open to suggestions regarding the Community Inclusiveness Task. She also inquired whether Tom had thought about how the Commission could measure its efforts. Tom responded he was wondering whether there were proven successful examples from other campuses. Eric noted Cindy Hicks, the Director of Downtown Ames, had shared with him ideas she received from Susan Stafford, the Off- Campus Housing and Neighborhood Relations Director of the University of Colorado - Boulder while attending a conference in Colorado. Eric added that welcome bags, dialogue dinners, move-in-orientation, door hangers, and party registration were successful for the University of Colorado - Boulder. Ian announced he thought about the dissemination of ordinances. He noted that communicating the ordinances to students would be very important. If students had a list of the ordinances, it would alleviate some of the issues in the neighborhoods. He suggested the idea of the Commission developing its own move-in-orientation. Karin gave an overview of the “First Friday” event in Campustown and noted the various groups participating. She noted that “First Friday” could encompass various pieces. Evelyn restated the idea of how the Commission could measure its efforts. She also inquired about whether there was a way some of the educational components could be easily accessible online. Tom responded that the Commission might get too far into sharing what the rules are that they do not get to address what it means to be in Ames. Karen stated that it might be difficult to measure their efforts when there is constantly a new crop of people. Tom added that the demographics were not changing. He also stated that he was thinking whether there was a way for the Commission to find out what was not working. Eric added that they could find out if something resonated and that they could build upon that. He also added that “First Friday” could be expanded to incorporate other activities. Karen noted Campustown is open to different groups joining “First Fridays.” Eric proposed the idea of having the neighbors set up tents in their neighborhoods. Evelyn responded that people like to be in one area and like to be seen. Evelyn stated that the hotspots from the Heat Maps of Nuisance Calls might not involve a neighbor but students interacting with students. Being a good neighbor applies to all ages. She also restated the idea of expanding the “First Friday” event. Karin inquired about Ian’s role as an off-campus senator and on how he could get involved in the “First Friday” event. Ian responded that he is also the president of the United Residents of Off-Campus (UROC). Senators of UROC represent students living off- campus. He also noted Student Government elected a Director of Student Residency who would oversee UROC. Karen proposed the idea of having members of UROC at First Friday to let people know they are a resource. Tom recalled the Cyclone “One Nation” banding of university sports. He proposed the idea of “One Ames” as an overarching program/campaign that runs all of the community inclusive events. The campaign would allow residents and students to identify with the idea of “One Ames”. Evelyn added that the “One Ames” idea could be tied to existing events. Eric also supported the idea of taking existing events and putting them under the “One Ames” umbrella. Ian agreed that it would be a good idea to consolidate the events. He stated that UROC could help with the consolidation of events. Ian also added that it would be a challenge communicating with students. Having an organization and consistent branding could help with communication and could prevent institutional knowledge from getting lost. Eric proposed getting everyone together at the next meeting to flesh out the “One Ames” idea better. He also proposed establishing a mission statement and using a focus group. Ian added that the idea of communication and interaction should be a goal/objective of the “One Ames” idea. Karin asked the group to think about ways to make the focus group more diverse. Commissioner Comments Ian mentioned he was excited to get work done and that his goal is to increase safety both on and off campus and to increase community engagement. Adjourn Eric moved the meeting be adjourned. The meeting adjourned at 6:50 p.m.
