City Council’s Direction on Addressing Tenant/Landlord Issues:
A. Revamp and promote RentSmart Ames website and use other forms of
informational material with the input of tenants and landlords: Landlords
and property managers, including those who attended the November 11 th ISU
housing fair, have been sent a survey and the deadline to respond is February
12th.
The current item in standing is sending out the student survey now that the
spring semester is in session.
Suggestions were made as how to best communicate the survey. The
Commission decided to pursue sending a mass email to all Iowa State Students
through the Solution Center at the University. There is an associated cost with
sending mass emails – $26.00 per email. Assistant City Manager Schildroth
stated the City could cover the cost. There may be as many as two (2) mass
emails sent so a cost of $52.00.
Stanley will draft the email and a follow-up reminder email for review by the
Commission before beginning the mass email process.
Discussion was had on possible ways to promote the survey beyond the mass
email to ensure student participation. No decision was made, further discussion
will occur following the review of the mass email draft.
B. Explore potential expansion of the Story County mediation pilot project: At
the previous meeting, discussion was had regarding mediation program services.
Assistant City Manager Schildroth updated the Commission on the status of this
program stating the Story County court system has not started providing online
dispute mediation (ODM) services, yet. The planning committee working on
establishing the service will be reviewing a study by the University of Arizona on
a similar program.
Assistant City Manager Schildroth provided an update for eviction extension. The
Biden Administration has extended the eviction moratorium until March 31, 2021.
Commissioner Comments: Chitty inquired about the number of responses received
for the landlord survey. Assistant City Manager Schildroth will check responses this
week and send the Commission a summary of the numbers. Chitty offered to contact
the landlords directly to help increase survey response numbers if necessary.
