HomeMy WebLinkAboutAtt 4 Dear City of Ames Zoning Board of Adjustment, I am writing to request that you deny the"Special Use Permit for Vacation Lodging"for the application of 2316 Camden Drive and any property located in our"Single Family Home Neighborhood"of the Somerset Subdivision. Allowing vacation lodging in our residential neighborhood would allow for a revolving door of vacationers that infringe on the right of primary residents of Camden Drive. The home has already been used for vacation lodging and has caused a number of concerns including: safety, noise, and disruption. Passing this permit would perpetuate and possibly escalate a number of ongoing violations and safety issues caused by vacationers of this property. We moved into our home on Camden Dr. about 21 years ago and chose the Somerset"Single Family Housing"area as a safe and family oriented area to live in here in Ames. There are many families with children that live on Camden Drive and allowing vacation lodging on our street would take away the safe family atmosphere. It would be a mistake. We ask for your support of our neighborhood and the safety of our families in denying this and future permit applications. I moved to this neighborhood because of its well-known charm, safety, and location. Imagine my shock and surprise to find that I have a"hotel" across the street, let alone an unsupervised hotel, absent of any owner or proprietor on site. Strange cars are parking in front of my house and walking on my parking, people who are NOT my neighbors. Also imagine me having to explain this to someone who wishes to purchase my house! Perhaps someone with small children who play in the neighborhood, oh, but wait, it is no longer a neighborhood. Is it? This type of business should not be permitted in a residential area. And what are the laws and regulations on this kind of a business?May other businesses now operate out of homes on this street? Why not? I am a former board member of our Homeowner's Association in Somerset. I am appalled that this would be allowed in a quiet neighborhood where people choose to live because of its privacy, safety and friendliness. Please consider not allowing this to happen. Why take one of Ames most appealing neighborhoods and throw it away? Thank you. wise O'Donnell 2317 Camden Drive Ames, Iowa 50010 louiseodo(),isunet.net 515 321 0559 2 c> Diane& Jerry Dischler 2401 Camden Drive Ames, Ia 50010 Rebuttal to Catherine Edsall request to use 2316 Camden Drive as a Vacation Lodge use. It will be three years since purchasing my home this fall, what helped me to decide to move to this area was the safety of the area. Since Ms. Edsall has allowed occupants to come an go at 2316 Camden as a "motel" (commercial venture), I am concerned about my safety as well as the safety of our granddaughter who spends summers and many weekends at our home. Allowing strangers into this neighborhood without knowing who they are creates an element of the unknown and a risk factor to children and residents. Many of the people who rent here come in vans. I have had my home photographed by a stranger from that home , had people use my yard as their dogs bathroom. Many of these people are from other states, it seems that if they have the money to pay Ms. Edsall, she could care less about the renter. May I suggest she relocate her business to her home or next to her property ? I have had 10 Japanese men on the front lawn smoking who stayed at that home! ! Most notable is the man from Illinois who started his diesel pickup at 5 am; my bedroom is diagonal from that home. The noise and reverbration from the pickup shook me out of bed, I proceeded to dress and go over and tell him to shut it off as I was trying to sleep and didn't think he needed to warm it up for that length of time. When I went there to confront him,he wouldn't come to the door. But the minute I was back in my home, he shut the pick up motor off. That was the moment that I realized that we did not have an owner occupied home. I saw little in the garage other than empty storage containers. I feel that having this type of rental unit here will adversely affect my homes value. I feel that Ms. Edsall was very self serving and sneaky about her purchase of this home for this use. I think she should be told to stop jeopardizing our safety by bringing in an unknown element to this area. Jerry awd Dram Dtsc.Ker 51S 5 :L--4202 515 5j 1-SODS 1 n n H V T ICI f'I s : i ' i
