DECISION & ORDER
Planner Eloise Salilstrorn presented the application f6ra Special Use Peri-nit to the Board. U.S.
CCIlUlar OCCUpieS the top three cellular eqUipInCin locations on the existing monopole at 106,
South Dakota Avenue, which is as location owned by the Ames Wonien's Club. [J& (1, CHU1,11" is
requesting approval of an amended Special Usel)errnit to install interior mounted antennas and
substantially larger stealth canisters oii the existing `stealth' ITIOnOpOle. The height of the existing
tower will remain unchariged,as set fbi-th in the application.
A Special Use Permit for the existing tower was approved in 2003„ which permitted as 120-foot
stealth nionopolc with interior mounted cellular antennas on the east side of'the Wornen's Club
building (north of the parking lot). The monopole and existing ground equipment are located
over a ]eased area that measures 50' by 50'. The existing monopole is located in accordance with
required setbacks oftlic zoning code. Atiy change to the design that would tnodify the stealth
elements origitially approved and requires an an-ienchrient to, the existing Special Use Permit.
J.S. (I 'CHUlar is proposing to remove existing antennas an(] 28" stealth canisters on the top one-
third (40 feet) of the 120' towerand replace with larger antciinas and 48" stealth canisters. Sabre
hidustries has submitted as Structural analysis to shaft' and indicates that the towcr and base can
StrUCtUrally support the request. The Applicant JrjoteS that the area will not be affected by sat'ety
issues or Galling debris, because the tower meets the required setback standards and the proposed
antennas are interior mounted.
An existing eight -foot tall wood board fence, at the boundaries of'the lease area, encloses screens
and secures the equipment shelter and the base of the existing monopole. There is some
landscape screening. No change to the existing fencing is proposed, and all new equipment will
be located within the existing enclosure.
Staff' concluded that the proposed amendment to the existing SUP nict the requirements for a
Cell Tmvcr with Antennas and Nvith the general specific residential standards required for
granting the permit. As a result, Staffrecornmended that the Board approve the application.
