Dear Ms. Bellrichard:
Thank you for your letter of February 15,2016,regarding Verizon Wireless, and their
updated plan for a 129-foot monopole telecommunications tower located near Ames, IA.
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service(Service)has the following comments.
Because the project area has moved very little from the original plan,it is our understanding
that no suitable habitat was found for the federally endangered Indiana bat within the project
area. Based on this information,we concur with our earlier determination that the project
will have no effect on the endangered Indiana bat(Myotis sodalis). Should the project be
modified or new information indicate federally listed species may be affected, consultation
should be initiated.
Because of the potential for bird species protected under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act to
collide with communication towers,we encourage the use of bird-friendly siting, design,
and operation. We appreciate your efforts to minimize impacts to migratory birds. The
proposed tower minimizes impacts to migratory birds by eliminating the need for guy wires,
and using strobe lighting where applicable.
Additionally, clearing trees during the dormant season, Octoberl —March 30, can help
minimize impacts to and disruption of federally protected bird and bat species.
We appreciate the opportunity to work with you on this issue.

Dear Ms. Schindler:
Thank you for your letter of January, 2012,regarding Verizon Wireless and the prpposed
129-foot self-support telecommunications tower near Ames, Iowa. We have received your
assessment for the presence of Indiana bat habitat in the project area,as well as the tower site
evaluation form. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service(Service)has the following comments.
The project area contains no suitable habitat for the Indianan bat(Myotis sodalis). Based on this
information, the project will have no effect on the above mentioned federally listed endangered
species. Should the project be modified or new information indicate endangered species may be
affected, consultation should be initiated.
Because of the potential for bird species protected under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act(MBTA)
to collide with communication towers,we encourage the use of bird-friendly siting, design, and
operation. The proposed tower minimizes impacts to migratory birds by limiting tower height to
129 feet and eliminating the need for guy wires.
We appreciate the opportunity to work with you on this issue. For more information please
