Dear Ms. Van Meeteren, Mr. Keester, and the Zoning Board of Adjustment:
I would like to make my complaints anonymously regarding Joni King's Daycare
business at 2003 Hunziker Drive that you will discuss at tonight's meeting. That my
name is not on this letter does not make my comments any less valid, and would
appreciate your sincere consideration.
We have lived in this location for well over a decade, less than 200 feet from 2003
Hunziker, and in this time period, have complained at least eight times, directly to
Ms. King,to the City government, and to the police about the noise generated by her
childcare facility. Often there is loud crying, screaming, and yelling that lasts for
prolonged periods of time when the children are outside. Though we have voiced
our complaints by various avenues, I feel the response has been inconsistent and
limited at best. The noise has been an ongoing issue for many years despite our
communications.
I feel that the noise generated by the childcare facility has encroached on our
property and our ability to peacefully enjoy and work at our residence. Every
member of my family would concur.
My second comment is that when I have called the City to talk about this, I have
been told that my only course for remediation is to call the police and make a noise
complaint. I feel that the City could offer some intermediary solution, without
having to involve law enforcement.
Thirdly, I am quite surprised that only now is Ms. King required to have a permit to
operate the childcare center. And if the permit was required before now, and she
did not have one, I feel this demonstrates a certain lack of professionalism on her
part. I have also heard from another Ames resident that the home childcare center
in her neighborhood is generating the same sorts of issues as we have had. From
this, I conclude that home child care centers in residential neighborhoods should be
more tightly controlled, including taking complaints seriously, limiting the number
of children per facility, and requiring owners to have the proper certification for
operation.
Thank you for your consideration,Ames Resident
