HomeMy WebLinkAbout~Master - Awarding Contract to Burns & McDonnell for Professional Services for Power Plant Fire Risk Mitigation RESOLUTION NO. 22-310 RESOLUTION AWARDING CONTRACT TO BURNS & MCDONNELL FOR PROFESSIONAL SERVICES FOR POWER PLANT FIRE RISK MITIGATION FOR THE CITY OF AMES,IOWA WHEREAS, fire risk mitigation is important to the operation of power plants to ensure employee safety and to protect equipment; and, WHEREAS, the fire protection standards of today are more rigorous than the requirements when the Power Plant was originally built; and, WHEREAS,the City's insurance carrierhas made several loss prevention recommendations for the Power Plant and to address fire risks and possible equipment loss events, staff is pursuing a contract with a consulting engineering firm to provide fire protection engineering, contract administration, and possible field installation oversight for the Power Plant; and, WHEREAS, the Capital Improvements Plan (CIP) includes planned fire protection improvements to various systems within the Power Plant and staff had determined that the projects in the Plan will address the most pressing needs for fire protection upgrades within the Power Plant; and, WHEREAS, this Contract will allow the Power Plant to hire an engineering firm with fire protection expertise to act as the Owner's Engineer/Designer/Representative for various fire risk mitigation studies,for the preparation of specific fire systems design and specifications,and for fire system installation management, inspection, and testing; and, WHEREAS, staff will utilize the Contract to prioritize plans with the insurance company to achieve the most value and protection for the dollar; and, WHEREAS, on April 18, 2022, a Request for Proposals (RFP)was issued and on May 16, 2022, staff received one proposal from Burns &McDonnell, of Kansas City, Missouri; and, WHEREAS, after review of the proposal, staff recommends that a contract be awarded to Burns & McDonnell in an amount not to exceed$50,000;and, WHEREAS,payments would be calculated on unit prices for actual work performed and the Contract would be for the period of July 1, 2022, through June 30, 2023; and, WHEREAS,the Contract also includes provisions that allow it to be renewed for up to four additional 12 month periods for a total contract length of not more than five years. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Ames, Iowa, that the contract with Burns&McDonnell of Kansas City,Missouri, for Professional Services Fire Risk Mitigation for the Power Plant in an amount not to exceed$50,000 is hereby approved.
