RESOLUTION APPROVING THE POLICE DEPARTMENT'S APPLICATION TO AND
PARTICIPATION IN THE DEPARTMENT OF JUSTICE OFFICE OF JUSTICE
PROGRAMS BULLETPROOF VEST PARTNERSHIP PROGRAM
FOR THE CITY OF AMES
WHEREAS,the Ames Police Department is again requesting permission to apply for funding
from the Department of Justice, Office of Justice Programs, Bulletproof Vest Partnership (BVP)
program, and to participate in the Program should funds be awarded; and,
WHEREAS, the Bulletproof Vest Partnership Program provides funds to local law
enforcement agencies to support the purchase of new and replacement bulletproof vests for individual
officers; and,
WHEREAS, bulletproof vests have an approximate five-year lifecycle, and the Police
Department has a rotating schedule for replacement of vests for current officers, and as new officers
are added to the force, new vests must be purchased that are tailored to the individual officer; and,
WHEREAS, during 2022/23 fiscal year,the schedule calls for the acquisition or replacement
of ten vests with an estimated cost of$7,200; and,
WHEREAS,the Bulletproof Vest Partnership grant requires local agencies to provide 50%of
the cost and the BVP program will provide the other 50%; and,
WHEREAS, the 2022/23 Police budget was constructed with the expectation that the City
would apply for and receive a Bulletproof Vest Partnership grant and the Police Department's 50%
share has already been budgeted as a commodities expense.
NOW,THEREFORE,BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Ames,Iowa,that
the Police Department's application to and participation in the Department of Justice Office of Justice
Programs Bulletproof Vest Partnership Program is hereby approved.
