RESOLUTION APPROVING APPLICATION FOR GOVERNOR'S TRAFFIC SAFETY
BUREAU ENFORCEMENT GRANT PROGRAM
FOR THE CITY OF AMES
WHEREAS, the Police Department is requesting permission to apply for funding from the
Governor's Traffic Safety Bureau to support additional overtime traffic enforcement and to participate in the
project should funding be awarded; and,
WHEREAS,this Program is conducted through the Governor's Traffic Safety Bureau in cooperation
with local and county law enforcement agencies; and,
WHEREAS, its purpose is to address traffic safety problems, including alcohol, excessive speed,
pedestrian and bicycle safety, and vehicle occupant protection; and,
WHEREAS,the Program is designed with both enforcement and educational components to improve
driver safety and protection, to reduce impaired driving, and to enhance overall traffic safety; the Ames
Police Department has participated in similar annual programs in the past; and,
WHEREAS,this Grant will support additional enforcement during periods of high risk for impaired
driving,excessive speed, and crashes with the officers conducting this intensified traffic enforcement; and,
WHEREAS, additional enforcement will be added to the normal staffing levels for the Police
Department and will work on an overtime basis; and,
WHEREAS, the areas in which these officers work will be selected on the basis of citizen
complaints,officer observations, and traffic incident data; and,
WHEREAS, the Grant application would request$39,000 in funding for the following uses; 1)to
pay officers at an overtime rate,2)to replace an in-car mobile radar unit, 3)to fund acquisition of a Lidar,
laser radar unit, and 4) to send an officer to an annual National Traffic Safety Conference.
NOW, THEREFORE,BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Ames,Iowa,that the
application for and participation in the Governor's Traffic Safety Bureau Enforcement Grant program by the
Ames Police Department is hereby approved.
