HomeMy WebLinkAbout~Master - Approving Proceeding with the Design of an Ice-Skating Ribbon in the Downtown Plaza RESOLUTION NO. 21-504 RESOLUTION APPROVING PROCEEDING WITH THE DESIGN OF AN ICE- SKATING RIBBON IN THE DOWNTOWN PLAZA FOR THE CITY OF AMES, IOWA WHEREAS,when discussing the vision for the Downtown Plaza,City Council determined the Plaza should be a year-round destination, which included ice-skating; and, WHEREAS, the conceptual design done by Confluence in January 2021 included an ice- skating ribbon,and the design received positive feedback from the Parks and Recreation Commission, City Council, and the public; and, WHEREAS,there are two options regarding ice for the skating ribbon; 1) Synthetic ice,or 2) Real(Natural)ice,and as final design is being completed,a decision needs to be made regarding these two options as other components(building, storage, etc.)will be impacted by what option is chosen; and, WHEREAS,Confluence has sub-contracted with American Arena,of Burnsville,Minnesota, to design the ice-skating portion of the Plaza and they have investigated the two ice options; and, WHEREAS, City Council was informed at its July 27, 2021,meeting that if the decision was made to proceed with an ice system utilizing real(natural) ice,there would be $52,000 in additional design fees; and, WHEREAS, City staff traveled to Arden Hills, Minnesota, to skate on synthetic ice before making a recommendation, and feedback was solicited from members of the US Rink Association; and, WHEREAS, after reviewing the pros and cons of both types of ice, it was staffs recommendation to design the ice-skating ribbon with real (natural) ice. NOW,THEREFORE,BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Ames,Iowa,that the design of an ice-skating ribbon utilizing real (natural) ice is hereby approved.
