Re: AT&T's Proposal to Build a 150' Cellular Tower(monopole)with Antennas
In AT&T Mobility's(AT&T)pursuit of providing the highest quality wireless
telecommunications service, it proposes to build a telecommunications facility and cellular tower
(150' monopole) at 116 Beedle Drive, Ames, IA 50014. The proposal will involve building an
equipment shelter and a hundred fifty(150) foot monopole within leased premises, along with
(9)proposed antennas on the monopole. AT&T is amenable to any stealth options that the city
may desire, and/or smaller towers.
As part of AT&T's ongoing development and improvement of its wireless network,
Radio Frequency (RF) engineers have identified the need for a telecommunications facility in
this area of the Town. The required location of the facility was determined by computer
modeling that evaluates population density, topography, and current antenna system capacity.
The computer modeling defines a"Search Ring," which is the area in which a
telecommunications site must be located in order to properly integrate into AT&T's
telecommunications network.
The first step in AT&T's site selection process is to determine requirements from the
governing municipality. Once informed, site acquisition specialists search the area designated by
the RF engineers and AT&T. In order to minimize tower proliferation, the acquisition specialists
look to mount antennas on existing towers, water tanks, and other structures before considering
building a new tower. In this instance, however, there are no existing structures including water
tanks or towers owned by other companies.
After a thorough search of the Search Ring, 116 Beedle Drive was found to be the most
appropriate site based on practical and technological concerns. The location provides AT&T
with effective telecommunications service to an area where customers may currently find it
lacking. Two other candidates were identified, but both of these candidates are located in a
residential low density area, thus AT&T chose to select this candidate because it is in a highway
commercial area.
AT&T's proposed facility will not cause harm to the public health, safety, morals or
general welfare. As a condition of its license from the FCC, AT&T's technology does not cause
interference with any other form of communication, whether public or private. To the contrary,
AT&T's wireless technology provides many benefits to the community it serves, including the
