Request for Reasonable Accommodation
Supporting Information for an Exception
(This form must be filled out completely before your application will be accepted.)
In making a determination regarding the reasonableness of a Requested
Accommodation, specific factors shall be considered by the Zoning Board of
Adjustment. In order to facilitate review of this application for an Exception, the applicant
should address each of the "Factors" set forth in Section 29.1505(5) of the Zoning Ordinance,
which are listed below.
(Note: The applicant's explanation of how the request meets each of the factors may be
attached on a separate sheet, if sufficient space is not provided.)
1. Grounds for Accommodation. The Zoning Board of Adjustment shall review each
application for Reasonable Accommodation for the purpose of determining that the
following factors have been considered.
(a) Special needs created by the handicap.
Please explain what the special needs are that have been created by the handicap.
Both future residents are quadriplegics and are wheelchair bound
with a limited fixed income. Because they are physically unable to
perform most maintenance, they should be able to have the
opportunity to select alternate products, that not only look as though
the "fit" within their neighborhood, but are low maintenance and
managable to their capabilties and budget.
(b) Potential benefit that can be accomplished by the requested modification.
Please explain what the potential benefit will be, if the modification is allowed.
Replacement wood doors with good insulative properties and
warranties are not available; custom millwork wood doors are
available without replacement warranty for approximately $3000
each. Insulated fiberglass doors are available for approximately
$500 each. The twin home has four exterior doors. The Historic
Preservation Commission agreed to allow fiberglass doors on the
two rear doors only, and did not feel they had the authority to allow
the material change for the front two doors. The difference in cost is
around $5,000 for these two doors, a cost increase the Owners find
very difficult to afford.

(c) Potential impact on the surrounding uses.
Please explain whether or not there will be an impact on surrounding uses, if the
accommodation is allowed.
The new doors will not visibly look different than other doors in the historic district.
The doors materiality difference of fiberglass instead of wood would only be
recognizable by overall its weight to a professional installer, and the eventual
deterioration of the wood door in comparison to much easier upkeep for the
fiberglass. The passersby will not be able to recognize the difference.
(d) Physical attributes of the property and structures.
Describe the physical attributes of the property and structures so that the Board can
more clearly understand the need for accommodation.
The existing lot is vacant. The need for accommodation is based on the
Historic District and how it conflicts with accessibility of affordable materials in
new construction.
(e) Alternative accommodations that may provide an equivalent level of benefit.
Please explain whether or not there are alternatives that would result in an equivalent
level of benefit.
The only alternative for installing wood doors is cost prohibitive. By
definition the Partner Families for Habitat for Humanity have a very modest
income. The difference in cost is substantial.
