Subject: Zoning Board of Adjustment
March 12, 2014
City Clerk's Office
515 Clark Avenue
Ames, IA 50010
Dear Ms. Voss,
We are writing regarding the following March 12, 2014 Zoning Board of Adjustment meeting
agenda item:
Applicant: Steve O'Rourke
Subject Property: 1515 Florida Ave.
Variance to allow construction of self-storage facilities
Our neighborhood is primarily residential with a few small, long-term, low-impact businesses.
Many of us have continued to invest money into updates to our single-family residential homes
in an effort to keep our area quiet, safe and attractive.
We appreciate the mixed nature of the current neighborhood setting and value the history of
the old "Ontario." Thus, we feel allowing this type of commercial development does not lend
itself to the climate of our current neighborhood. Areas of concern include:
1) Spillover lighting
2) Increased traffic
3) Aesthetics
4) Security
Thank you for your consideration.
Sincerely,
John and Shirley Knipfel

Dear Ms. Voss,
Re: March 12, 2014 Zoning Board of Adjustment meeting agenda item: Variance to allow
construction of self-storage facilities at 1515 Florida Ave. by applicant Steve O'Rourke
We had spoken previously with Steve O'Rourke. At that time we had shared our similar
concerns as our neighbors with regard to security, lighting, and traffic day and night with the
building of self-storage facilities at 1515 Florida Ave. This is a mostly residential area with a
few businesses that have very little traffic and none at night. Also this type of facility seems to
mostly be located on main roads such as Lincoln and/or in completely commercial areas. We
would hope that the city would encourage some other type of owner/occupied venture in keeping
with the nature of this area.
Sincerely,
JoAnn Boehmer

Dear Ms.Voss,
We are writing regarding the following March 12, 2014 Zoning Board of Adjustment meeting agenda
item:
Applicant: Steve O'Rourke
Subject Property: 1515 Florida Ave.
Variance to allow construction of self-storage facilities
The current nature of our neighborhood is primarily residential with a few small, long-term, low-impact
businesses present. While we appreciate the mixed nature of the current neighborhood setting, we do
not feel that the proposed facility would be in keeping with the current, future, or desired direction of
our area. Our main concerns are 4-fold:
1) Spillover lighting
2) Increased traffic
3)Aesthetics
4) Security
It is our fear that the proposed facility would have a negative impact on the neighborhood with regards
to each of these items. Therefore we would like to state our opposition to this proposal.
Alternatively, we would encourage development that is in keeping with the historical significance of
"Old Ontario" and small business/owner occupied dwellings.
Thank you for your consideration.
Sincerely,
10
