RESOLUTION APPROVING 2020 U.S.DEPARTMENT OF JUSTICE EDWARD
BYRNE MEMORIAL JUSTICE ASSISTANT GRANT
FOR THE CITY OF AMES
WHEREAS, on May 12, 2020, the Council authorized the Police Department to apply for the 2020
Department of Justice,Office of Justice Programs,and Bureau of Justice Assistance Edward Byrne Memorial
Justice Assistance Grant(JAG)Program; and,
WHEREAS,the Grant conditions required that the application be filed jointly with Story County,and
the Council approved entering into a Memorandum of Understanding with Story County;and,
WHEREAS,the application and the Memorandum of Understanding were completed and submitted,
and on September 19,2020,the Department of Justice notified the Police Department that the Grant had been
awarded in full; and,
WHEREAS, Grant funds can be used for state and local initiatives, technical assistance, training,
personnel, equipment, supplies, contractual support, and information systems for criminal justice, as well as
research and evaluation activities that will improve or enhance law enforcement programs related to criminal
justice; and,
WHEREAS, there is no match requirement with this Grant; the Grant award is for$12,528, and the
funds will be used in a project primarily designed to support the bicycle officer program; and,
WHEREAS, the bicycle officer program will purchase several new bicycles, supporting equipment,
including lights and bags,will be purchased for the new bikes and updated on several existing bikes,protective
clothing for bicycle officers will be included,specialized radio equipment like blue tooth enabled microphones
will be acquired, and soft stretchers and other emergency medical response equipment will be added to the
police medical trauma kits.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Ames, Iowa, that
acceptance of the 2020 Department of Justice, Office of Justice Programs, and Bureau of Justice Assistance
Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant (JAG) is hereby approved, and the Police Department is
authorized to participate in the Program.
