I'm sending this e-mail in response to the June 7th council preview newsletter(a great form of outreach) and while it seems like the changes seem to be more positive as far as public park space is concerned, I'd really like for the council to push more strongly for increasing the population density and amount of multi-family housing (including the"missing middle" of duplexes and triplexes) since you really only get one chance at developing new parcels of land like this. It's also kind of frustrating that the denser areas of development are often the ones that are most distant from the rest of the city and the services it offers. I know the proposal says it fits in with the current smart growth plans, but if Ames has to expand out further to accommodate its projected needs for housing from the 2040 plan I think it should work harder to avoid the need for additional sprawl in the future. I attended some of the Ames 2040 public workshops and it can be frustrating to see slower or reduced progress in creating more (and more affordable) housing in Ames. I would like for us to try to get the most out of this opportunity. I'm also excited, for the future connection of a north-south shared use path on Hyde, but am a bit less enthused about the 3 entrances/exits that would be crossing it on Parcels 5 and 8.The middle one seems like kind of an unnecessary pain point as far as pedestrian/recreational traffic is concerned. Thank you, Jim Schreitmueller 2108 Furman Dr. (Ward 2) 1
