HomeMy WebLinkAbout~Master - Allocating $23,000 from Road Use Tax Fund for Informational Signage RESOLUTION NO. 19-027 RESOLUTION ALLOCATING$23,000 FROM ROAD USE TAX FUND FOR INFORMATIONAL SIGNAGE FOR THE CITY OF AMES WHEREAS,on July 31,2018,the City Council directed staff to draft a game day parking ordinance for Council consideration; and, WHEREAS, the purpose of this ordinance would be to increase the penalty for illegal parking in stadium-adjacent neighborhoods during football home games; and, WHEREAS,the increase would make illegal parking less attractive compared to legitimate game-day parking options, reducing the inconvenience to residents and safety issues created by widespread illegal parking in stadium-adjacent neighborhoods; and, WHEREAS,an ordinance has been drafted that establishes a$40 fine for illegal parking from 6:00 a.m.to midnight on ISU football home game days and the fine is reduced to $35 if paid within seven days; and, WHEREAS, implementation of this ordinance should be accompanied by a substantial public education effort; and, WHEREAS,the public educational effort began in the fall with warning notices about the potential increased fines for next fall,the City will request that ISU provide notice of this ordinance as part of football ticket sales, and the City will need to change signs in the affected area and post additional notices at major streets leading into the special enforcement zone; and, WHEREAS,the cost of installing an additional 531 informational signs on existing poles is estimated to be $21,500 and City staff also estimates that an additional 50 special signs will be required to provide notification at entrances into this area at a cost of$1,500;bringing the total expense for additional signage to $23,000. NOW, THEREFORE,BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Ames,Iowa,that the $23,000 from the Road Use Tax Fund balance to purchase the required informational parking signs is hereby approved.
