Home My WebLink About~Master - 2018-2021 Intergovernmental Agreement with Metro Waste Authority for Household Hazardous Materials Collection RESOLUTION NO. 18-166 RESOLUTION APPROVING 2018-2021 INTERGOVERNMENTAL AGREEMENT WITH METRO WASTE AUTHORITY FOR HOUSEHOLD HAZARDOUS MATERIALS COLLECTION FOR THE CITY OF AMES WHEREAS, Since 1998, the City of Ames, through the Resource Recovery System, has contracted with Metro Waste Authority (MWA) for operation of a satellite Household Hazardous Materials (HHM)collection operation; and, WHEREAS, the MWA owns the small building where the collected materials are received and stored for pick-up; the collected materials are then transported to MWA's facility in Bondurant, Iowa, and are safely processed in accordance with state and federal regulations; and, WHEREAS, Resource Recovery staff members receive HHM handling training and work with the customers when they make appointments to drop-off HIM; and, WHEREAS, the 2013 to 2017 contract cost was $0.87 per capitaa or a total of$76,431.24 annually, and the proposed three-year contract continues at a new rate of$0.92, for a total cost of $80,823.84; and, WHEREAS, the relatively high cost per user is offset by the knowledge that the materials are properly disposed of in an environmentally safe manner; also, providing the HHM service is a requirement of the City's National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) stormwater permit. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Ames, Iowa, that the proposed 2018-2021 Intergovernmental Agreement for a satellite Household Hazardous Waste collection and disposal operation with Metro Waste Authority at an annual cost of$80,823.84 is hereby approved.
