HomeMy WebLinkAbout~Master - Ames Velo for Ames Grand Prix - closure of metered parking spaces and suspension of parking regulations RESOLUTION NO. 18-159 RESOLUTION APPROVING CLOSURE OF METERED PARKING SPACES AND SUSPENSION OF PARKING REGULATIONS FOR AMES GRAND PRIX MAIN STREET CRITERIUM EVENT FOR THE CITY OF AMES WHEREAS, the Ames Velo organization has proposed hosting the Ames Grand Prix bicycle races on Saturday, June 16, and Sunday, June 17; and, WHEREAS, the event consists of timed races of 10 to 50 riders per race along a short circuit, and it is anticipated that riders will reach speeds of up to 35 miles per hour on the course; and, WHEREAS, on Saturday, June 16, the races will take place Downtown from 4:00 p.m. until about 11:00 p.m.; and, WHEREAS, to facilitate this event, organizers have requested the following street closures from 4:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m.: closure of Main Street from Clark Avenue to Douglas Avenue; Douglas Avenue from Main Street to 6th Street; 61h Street from Douglas Avenue to Burnett Avenue; Burnett Avenue from 6th Street to 51h Street; 5th Street from Douglas Avenue to Clark Avenue, Kellogg Avenue from Main Street to 6th Street, and Clark Avenue from 5th Street to Main Street; and, WHEREAS, the event organizers have further requested that 187 metered parking spaces along the race route be closed and parking enforcement be suspended from 2:30 p.m. to 11:00 p.m.; and, WHEREAS, organizers have contacted the Main Street Cultural District regarding this event, and it has provided a letter of support; and, WHEREAS, organizers have experience hosting similar bicycle racing events and have taken precautions in their planning to ensure a safe, enjoyable event for the coirnnnmity. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Ames, Iowa, that the closure of 187 metered parking spaces on the aforementioned streets on Saturday, June 16, 2018, for the Ames Grand Prix Main Street Criterium is hereby approved, and the suspension of parking enforcement is hereby finther approved, subject to reimbursement for lost parking revenue.
