HomeMy WebLinkAbout~Master - 2018 Neighborhood Art acquisitions RESOLUTION NO. 18-105 RESOLUTION APPROVING 2018 NEIGHBORHOOD ART ACQUISITIONS FOR THE CITY OF AMES WHEREAS, included in the Public Art Commission's (PAC) 2017/18 adjusted budget is a $26,500 budget allocation for the acquisition of sculptures under the Neighborhood Art program ($13,500 budgeted and $13,000 carry over from FYI 7); and, WHEREAS, this program provides for sculptures from the previous year's Ames Annual Outdoor Sculpture Exhibition (AAOSE) to be purchased and placed in neighborhoods around the City; to date, $1,877 has been spent from this account, leaving an available balance of$24,623; and, WHEREAS, the PAC is now recommending that the Council authorize the purchase of four sculptures for the Neighborhood Art Program; and, WHEREAS, at the request of the neighborhood, the commission would like to locate the steel sculpture, "In Bloom," on the circle at Buchanan at the east entrance to Parkview Heights Park; and, WHEREAS, the artist, Sean Heldt, is an Ames resident, and the purchase price is $2,000; and, WHEREAS, "Improbable Balance" is a sculpture made of steel and polished concrete, and Missouri artist Joe Maleski has agreed to accept an offer of $2,400 for this art piece (it will be located in a site to be determined); and, WHEREAS, the Public Art Commission would like to purchase "Into the Maelstrom" from the 2017/18 AAOSE show for placement in the cul-de-sac in the 900 block of Idaho Avenue at the request of the Spring Valley Neighborhood; and, WHEREAS, the artist is Craig Snyder of Plymouth, Minnesota, and the cost of acquisition is $5,000; and, WHEREAS, "Letting Go," by artist Judd Nelson from Wayzata, Minnesota, will be located at the northwest corner of South 4t' Street and South Hazel Avenue; and, WHEREAS, the artist has agreed to an offer of$9,200 for this steel sculpture; and, WHEREAS, these four purchases will utilize $18,600 of the $24,623 available allocation.; it should be noted that the PAC will be returning to the Council with a budget reallocation later this month in order to purchase one additional piece; and, WHEREAS, the Public Art Commission feels that these acquisitions will be memorable additions to the neighborhoods and to the City's public art collection, NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Ames, Iowa, that the 2018 Neighborhood Art acquisitions are hereby approved.
