RESOLUTION AUTHORIZING ADDITION OF FTE CIVIL ENGINEER
FOR THE PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT
FOR THE CITY OF AMES
WHEREAS, ongoing growth in our cominunity, coupled with the City's proactive approach
to maintaining our infrastructure, have led to a continuing increase in the Public Works engineering
workload,particularly in the Engineering and Traffic Divisions; and,
WHEREAS, this involves a continuing increase in the City's CIP projects, review and
coordination of private development projects, and efforts put into addressing ongoing customer
service needs; and,
WHEREAS, the workload on engineering staff has been exacerbated since two of the three
design positions (civil engineers)have been vacant this spring and summer; and,
WHEREAS, it has become apparent that another permanent, full time civil engineer position
is needed, and this position would be part of the Traffic Division and would focus mainly on CIP
project design; and,
WHEREAS, this position would take a lead role with customer service duties, such as
localized traffic studies, work on Council referrals, citizen contacts, and right-of-way permits; and,
WHEREAS, the new engineer would supervise the Ames Area Metropolitan Planning
Organization(AAMPO)work activities; and,
WHEREAS, approximately two-thirds of the cost for this new position will be recouped
through charging this engineering expense against planned CIP projects, the Road Use Tax fund will
cover one-fourth of the expense, and AAMPO funding will cover the balance.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Ames, Iowa,
that the addition of one Full-Time Equivalent (FTE) civil engineer for the Public Works Traffic
Division, along with recommended revenue sources, is hereby authorized.
