RESOLUTION APPROVING STREET AND PARKING LOT CLOSURES FOR
MIDNIGHT MADNESS ROAD RACE EVENTS
FOR THE CITY OF AMES
WHEREAS, the annual Midnight Madness races will be held in the downtown area on
Saturday, July 8, 2017, and the event includes 5k, IOk, and kid runs, followed by a beer garden and
activities near City Hall; and,
WHEREAS, last year, the route was altered to accommodate the Sixth Street Bridge Project;
this new route was successful, and the organizers would like to use it again this year; and,
WHEREAS, organizers are requesting the following street and parking lot closures on
Saturday, July 8, from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m for the Midnight Madness races: 5th Street from Pearle
Avenue to Douglas Avenue; Douglas Avenue from 5th Street to 10" Street; 10" Street from Douglas
Avenue to Clark Avenue; Clark Avenue from 10t" Street to Main Street; Main Street from Burnett
Avenue to Northwestern Avenue; Northwestern Avenue from Main Street to 91" Street; 91" Street
from Northwestern to Brookridge Avenue; Ridgewood Avenue from Brookridge Avenue to 6"
Street; and, 61" Street from Ridgewood Avenue to Northwestern Avenue; and,
WHEREAS, organizers are fizrther requesting the closure of the following streets for the
Midnight Madness event, but these streets are not part of the race route: Burnett and Kellogg
Avenues from 5" Street to 10" Street; 6t" Street, 7t" Street, 8t" Street, and 9t" Street from Clark
Avenue to Douglas Avenue; and, Park Way; and,
WHEREAS, it is also requested that the following be closed for post-race activities from 6
p.m. on July 8, to 1 a.m. on July 9: Clark Avenue from 6t" Street to 5t" Street; and, East City Hall
Parking Lot N; and,
WHEREAS, the Public Works Traffic Division will provide barricades and traffic cones to
facilitate this event; and,
WHEREAS, this proposed route involves the crossing of the Union Pacific Railroad (UPRR)
north-south single-track rail line at 91" Street; Midnight Madness organizers will confer with UPRR
to ensure the race schedule will not conflict with train traffic.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Ames, Iowa,
that the aforementioned street closures and parking lot closure for the Midnight Madness Road Race
events on July 8-9, 2017, are hereby approved..
ADOPTED THIS 13" day of June, 2017.
