HomeMy WebLinkAbout~Master - Closure of on-street parking spaces for MSCD's Firefly Country Night on July 14 RESOLUTION NO. 17-306 RESOLUTION APPROVING CLOSURE OF PARKING SPACES FOR FIREFLY COUNTRY NIGHT ON JULY 14, 2017, FOR THE CITY OF AMES WHEREAS, at the March 7, 2017, meeting, the City Council approved requests from London Underground to host Firefly Country Nights on July 14 and September 8 on Main Street in Ames; and, WHEREAS, following the approval of these events, the Main Street Cultural District (MSCD),which had organized the Firefly Country Nights in prior years,received feedback from affected property owners regarding the events; and, WHEREAS, while some feedback was positive, a significant amount of negative feedback was received; and, WHEREAS, therefore, the MSCD has proposed the following key changes to these events: the MSCD will assume responsibility for both Firefly Country Night events from London Underground; and, the July 14 Country Night will be moved to Bandshell Park,and will be under the rules adopted by the Parks and Recreation Commission; and, WHEREAS, with the new location, the MSCD is requesting the closure of East 5t' Street between Duff Avenue and Carroll Avenue from 6:00 a.m. to 11:59 p.m. on July 14; and, WHEREAS, the MSCD is further requesting the closure of on-street parking spaces within the closed area; and, WHEREAS, following the original approval of the Firefly Country Night events earlier this spring,the MSCD has re-evaluated how these events are proposed to take place; and, WHEREAS,the requested changes bring the "ownership" of the events back under the Main Street Cultural District and provide venues for the event that are smaller than the originally planned venue; these new venues will directly affect fewer Downtown businesses than the original plan. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Ames, Iowa,that the closure of on-street parking spaces within the closed street area on July 14,2017, for the Firefly Country Night is hereby approved.
