RESOLUTION APPROVING CLOSURE OF METERED PARKING SPACES AND
SUSPENSION OF PARKING REGULATIONS FOR AMES GRAND PRIX
MAIN STREET CRITERIUM EVENT
FOR THE CITY OF AMES
WHEREAS, the Ames Velo organization has proposed hosting the Ames Grand Prix bicycle
races on Saturday, June 10, and Sunday, June 11; and,
WHEREAS, the event consists of timed races of 10 to 50 riders per race along a short circuit,
and it is anticipated that riders will reach speeds of up to 35 miles per hour on the course; and,
WHEREAS, on Saturday, June 10, the races will take place Downtown from 3:00 p.m. until
about 8:00 p.m.; and,
WHEREAS, to facilitate this event, organizers have requested the following street closures:
closure of Main Street from Clark Avenue to Douglas Avenue; Douglas Avenue from Main Street
to 6th Street; 6t' Street from Douglas Avenue to Burnett Avenue; Burnett Avenue from 6t' street to
5t' Street; 5t' Street from Burnett Avenue to Clark Avenue; and, Clark Avenue from 5th Street to
Main Street; and,
WHEREAS, the event organizers have further requested that 187 metered parking spaces
along the race route be closed and parking enforcement be suspended from 2:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.;
and,
WHEREAS, organizers have contacted the Main Street Cultural District regarding this event,
and it has provided a letter of support; and,
WHEREAS, this event is a unique opportunity to bring bicycle racing to Ames, and the event
proposed has the support of the Main Street Cultural District and the ISU Research Park; and,
WHEREAS, organizers have experience hosting similar bicycle racing events and have taken
precautions in their planning to ensure a safe, enjoyable event for the community.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Ames, Iowa,
that the closure of 187 metered parking spaces on the aforementioned streets on Saturday, June 10,
2017, for the Ames Grand Prix Main Street Criterium is hereby approved, and the suspension of
parking enforcement is hereby further approved, subject to reimbursement for lost parking revenue.
ADOPTED THIS 251h day of April, 2017.
