RESOLUTION APPROVING CLOSURE OF METERED PARKING SPACES
FOR "FIREFLY COUNTRY NIGHT"
FOR THE CITY OF AMES
WHEREAS, in the past several years, the Main Street Cultural District (MSCD) has held an
annual Firefly Country Night on Main Street, which features country musicians performing on a
stage placed in the 200 block of Main Street; and,
WHEREAS, this year, Jess Clyde of London Underground and Bill Malone of Cafe Diem
have assumed responsibility for organizing the event; MSCD has endorsed the event, and will
receive a portion of the proceeds from the organizers; and,
WHEREAS, to facilitate this event, organizers have requested the closure of Main Street
between Kellogg Avenue and Douglas Avenue from 6:00 a.m. to 11:59 p.m. on Friday, July 14; and,
WHEREAS, organizers have further requested the closure of 45 parking spaces within the
closed area on July 14; and,
WHEREAS, City staff recommends that the organizers be required to reimburse the City for
lost parking meter revenue; and,
WHEREAS, Firefly Country Night has been successfully held in previous years, and the
organizers of this year's event have been directly involved with the planning and execution of the
prior iterations of the event when it was produced by the Main Street Cultural District; and,
WHEREAS, given this experience, the proposed plans, and the timeframe in which this event
will be conducted, City staff believes appropriate steps are being taken to make this a safe endeavor;
and,
WHEREAS, because this event has the support of the Main Street Cultural District, and
assuming the City Council is supportive of hosting activities of this nature on City property, it is the
recommendation of the City Manager that the City Council approving the request as indicated above.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Ames, Iowa,
that the request to close 45 metered parking spaces on Main Street between Kellogg Avenue and
Douglas Avenue on Friday, July 14, 2017, for the Firefly Country Night is hereby approved, subject
to the organizers being required to reimburse the City for lost parking revenue.
ADOPTED THIS 71' day of March, 2017.
