RESOLUTION APPROVING STREET CLOSURE AND PARKING SPACES
CLOSURES FOR HEALTHIEST AMES OPEN STREETS EVENT
FOR THE CITY OF AMES
WHEREAS, on Sunday, October 2,2016,the Healthiest Ames organization plans to host a
wellness initiative called Open Streets; and,
WHEREAS, this event is intended to promote healthy activities, support local businesses,
and encourage sustainable transport; and,
WHEREAS,to achieve this,activities such as wellness education,healthy food samples,and
play activities will occur in the Downtown area; and,
WHEREAS,organizers expect up to 1,500 participants and plan to have 50 to 100 volunteers
on hand to manage the activities;Healthiest Ames has held similar events in the past two years;and,
WHEREAS, the event will take place from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., and to facilitate it, organizers
have requested the closure of Main Street between Pearle Avenue and Douglas Avenue from 8 a.m.
until 5 p.m.; and,
WHEREAS, the group is further requesting the closure of 168 on-street metered parking
spaces and 118 parking spaces in Depot Lot V,and the suspension of parking enforcement for these
areas; and,
WHEREAS,because the event takes place on a Sunday,no parking meter revenues will be
affected; and,
WHEREAS, the Main Street Cultural District is in support of the Healthiest Ames event.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Ames, Iowa,
that the closure of Main Street and the closure of the aforementioned parking spaces for the
Healthiest Ames Open Streets event on Sunday, October 2, 2016, are hereby approved.
ADOPTED THIS 26`h day of July, 2016.
