HomeMy WebLinkAbout~Master - Closure of metered parking spaces for Bike Nights RESOLUTION NO. 16-114 RESOLUTION APPROVING CLOSURE OF METERED PARKING SPACES AND WAIVER OF PARKING METER FEES FOR BIKE NIGHT EVENTS IN MAIN STREET CULTURAL DISTRICT FOR THE CITY OF AMES WHEREAS,the Main Street Cultural District(MSCD)held its first Bike Night last year in June, followed by another iteration in August, and both events were successful at bringing large numbers of motorcycles to the Downtown area for a family-friendly event; and, WHEREAS, based on the success of last year's events, the MSCD plans to host five Bike Night events this summer, and each will take place on the fourth Friday of the month (May 27, June 24, July 22, August 26, and September 23); and, WHEREAS,the event is planned to be family-friendly and includes motorcycle displays,live music, a live radio broadcast, award presenters, and food vendors; and, WHEREAS, to facilitate this event, organizers request the following street closures on May 27, June 24, July 22, August 26, and September 23: closure of Main Street from Burnett Avenue to Duff Avenue from 2 p.m.to 10:30 p.m.; closure of Douglas Avenue from Main Street to Fifth Street from 1 p.m.to 10 p.m.; and,closure of Kellogg Avenue from Main Street to Fifth Street from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m.; and, WHEREAS, to facilitate this event, organizers request the closure of 96 metered parking spaces within the closed areas and the waiver of the parking meter fees on the above-mentioned dates; and, WHEREAS, the estimated lost parking meter revenue is $372; and, WHEREAS, the closed parking spaces on Main Street will be used to provide free motorcycle parking for the patrons; and, WHEREAS, Bike Night has become a signature event for the MSCD, and organizers have worked to enhance the event from its iterations last year, which were well attended. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Ames, Iowa, that closures of 96 metered parking spaces with the closed areas during the Bike Night events on May 27, June 24, July 22, August 26, and September 23 are hereby approved, and the waiver of parking meter fees is hereby further approved.
