HomeMy WebLinkAbout~Master - Street closures for Ames Main Street Farmers' Market RESOLUTION NO. 16-100 RESOLUTION APPROVING STREET CLOSURES FOR AMES MAIN STREET FARMERS' MARKET FOR THE CITY OF AMES WHEREAS, the Ames Chamber of Commerce is planning to host the sixth annual Main Street Farmers'Market this summer,which will take place on the 300 and 400 blocks of Main Street and on Burnett Avenue from Main Street to the U.S. Bank drive-through; and, WHEREAS, the Market will operate on 24 Saturdays from May 7 to October 15 from 8:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.; and, WHEREAS,to facilitate set-up and tear-down, streets and parking spaces need to be closed from 5:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. each day; and, WHEREAS,the portion of Clark Avenue between the Main Street and Lincoln Way will be reconstructed this summer as part of the FY 2015/16 Downtown Pavement Improvements, and the timing of this project will not be known until it is bid in April,but it is anticipated that traffic will be affected between Clark Avenue and the CBD parking lot for several weeks during the Farmers' Market season; and, WHEREAS,Farmer's Market organizers have been made aware ofthis project,and City staff will communicate updates to them and other affected businesses as details are available; and, WHEREAS, the Council should note that a letter concerning the location of the Farmers' Market was received by business owner on Main Street, and he indicated that the Market causes an inconvenience to his and other Downtown businesses, as well as irritation to Downtown residents; and, WHEREAS, City staff has relayed the business owner's concerns to the Farmers' Market organizers, who indicate they have met with the owner to discuss these concerns; and, WHEREAS,the organizers suggest that the Downtown businesses have been surveyed and overwhelmingly support the Market; and, WHEREAS, the alternative locations suggested by the business owner have not been evaluated for feasibility by the Farmers' Market organizers or City staff. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Ames, Iowa, that closure of the 300 and 400 blocks of Main Street and Burnett Avenue from Main Street to the U.S. Bank drive-through on 24 Saturdays from May 7, 2016, through October 15, 2016, for the Downtown Farmers' Market from 5:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. are hereby approved.
