HomeMy WebLinkAbout~Master - Acceptance of 2015 Edward Byrne Memoral Justice Assistance Grant RESOLUTION NO. 15-573 RESOLUTION ACCEPTING 2015 U.S. DEPARTMENT OF JUSTICE EDWARD BYRNE MEMORIAL JUSTICE ASSISTANCE GRANT FOR THE CITY OF AMES WHEREAS, on June 23, 2015, the Council authorized the Police Department to apply for the 2015 Department of Justice, Office of Justice Programs, Bureau of Justice Assistance Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant(JAG) Program; and, WHEREAS, the grant conditions required that the application be filed jointly with Story County and that the City Council approved entering into a Memorandum of Understanding with Story County; and, WHEREAS, the application and the Memorandum of Understanding were completed and submitted;and on September 16,2015,the Department of Justice notified the Police Department that the grant had been awarded in full; and, WHEREAS, grant funds can be used for state and local initiatives, technical assistance, training,personnel,equipment, supplies,contractual support,and information systems for criminal justice, as well as research and evaluation activities that will improve or enhance law enforcement programs related to criminal justice; and, WHEREAS,the grant award is for$14,625, and the Police Department proposes to use the funds in a joint project with the Story County Sheriff's Office to support mental health services programs within the agencies; and, WHEREAS, available funds will be used to send personnel to advanced training on crisis prevention and intervention as it relates to mental illness, and additional funds will be used to support training for local officers, deputies, dispatcher and jailers; and, WHEREAS, funds will also be used to purchase medical diagnostic equipment for the jail so that the physical health of those on medication can be more rapidly and accurately established and monitored. WHEREAS, there is no match requirement with this grant. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Ames, Iowa, that the 2015 Department of Justice, Office of Justice Programs, Bureau of Justice Assistance Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant(JAG)Program,is hereby accepted,and the Police Department is authorized to participate in the program.
