BACKGROUND: As per the agreement-entered into between the City of Ames and Develop- ers of Northridge Parkway Subdivision First Addition, the City and Devel- oper are to split equally the costs of the above work and the widening of County Road R-50. The above work was done by the developer to comply with city plans and specifications for the road work. The earth for the filled area came from the detention pond excavation. The detention pond construction required moving a large quantity of earth to various areas within the subdivision. There was more material available than desired and the City had the Developer place the excess along County Road R-50. The Developer and the City agreed on splitting the costs to haul, place and compact this material that the Developer was already excavating. Before this work could be completed, culverts had to be extended and ditches graded for drainage. Erosion control measures such as seeding and rip rap were also necessary. Since the contractor doing the detention pond construction was doing similar work for the Developer, the City and Developer agreed to do the storm sewer extensions, ditching, seeding, and rip rap at the same time the fill was placed on a time and materials basis. The developers contractor completed all of the work satisfactorily. Had the City not been able to take advantage of this situation, the costs for this work would have easily exceeded $40,000. The actual cost of the work is $31,339.06 which the City and Developer share equally. The Developer has already paid the contractor for all of the work complet- ed and has requested reimbursement of the City's portion of $15,619.53. At the completion of the contract for widening and painting of R-50 that project cost will be approximately $49,500 of which the City share is $24,750. The total project cost for grading, paving, storm sewer, and drainage is approximately $80,900 of which the City share is $40,450. e_ V s CAF - Co. Rd. MANAGER'S RECOMMENDED ACTION: It is recommended by the City Manager that the City Council approve the issuance of a purchase order to H & F Construction, Friedrich Construc- tion Co. and Bob Buck Construction in the amount of $15,619.53 for the City share of grading, ditching, storm sewer, seeding, and rip rap for the County Road R-50 widening project.
