RESOLUTION APPROVING LIBRARY STAFF REORGANIZATION FOR NEW
LIBRARY AND APPROVING THE ADDITION OF 2.75 FTES
FOR THE CITY OF AMES,IOWA
WHEREAS, the Ames Public Library has undertaken a staff reorganization to ensure
excellent customer service in the renovated and expanded Library facility; and,
WHEREAS, in August 2013, the appointment of the new Library Director left a vacant
Assistant Library Director position,presenting an opportunity to examine the overall staffing needs
of the much larger Library facility; and,
WHEREAS, upon the appointment of the new Library Director, a team was assigned to
review and to recreate, if necessary, the organizational structure for the Library; and,
WHEREAS,the team spent considerable time reviewing the organization's structure, and it
identified redundancies and efficiencies during the review process, and assessed job duties; and,
WHEREAS, after a thorough review, a new structure to the organization was identified to
best service the new facility, and recommendations were made for appropriate reclassifications of
job duties; and,
WHEREAS,the team also identified best practices and areas for improvement,and provided
recommendations for meeting service demands in a two-story building with a 60%increase in floor
area; and,
WHEREAS,foremost,the team determined that the duties of the Assistant Library Director
should be redistributed among five manager positions, while the budget for the Assistant Library
Director position should be reallocated to a combination of reclassifications and creation of new
positions; and,
WHEREAS, the primary goal of the reorganization is to ensure that unmet needs are
addressed and that duties are assigned to the proper classifications; and,
WHEREAS,additionally,Library Administration would like to provide increased continuity
of service and reduce time spent hiring and training,and it was determined that the greatest need was
in the area of technology support and clerks to assist with library-wide activities and workflow;and,
WHEREAS, this request includes the elimination of the Assistant Library Director(1 Full
Time Equivalent position, or FTE) and the addition of a Client Support Technician (.75 FTE), a
Resource Support Services Clerk(.5 FTE),two half-time Youth Services Clerks(1 FTE),and three
half-time Customer Account Services Clerks (1.5 FTE).
NOW, THEREFORE,BE IT RESOLVED,by the City Council of the City of Ames, Iowa,
that the elimination of the Assistant Library Director(1 Full Time Equivalent position,or FTE)and
the addition of a Client Support Technician(75 FTE),a Resource Support Services Clerk(.5 FTE),
two half-time Youth Services Clerks(1 FTE),and three half-time Customer Account Services Clerks
(1.5 FTE), all for the Ames Public Library are hereby approved.
ADOPTED THIS 8t'day of April, 2014.
