HomeMy WebLinkAbout~Master - Ames Intermodal Facility Stair Modification RESOLUTION NO. 12-412 RESOLUTION APPROVING AMES INTERMODAL FACILITY STAIR MODIFICATION FOR THE CITY OF AMES,IOWA WHEREAS,while walking a punch list,Neumann Monson noticed cracks at the center span of the bottom of the elevated cast in place concrete stairs,and it then proceeded to have Terracon conduct a scan of the stairs with ground penetrating radar in order to determine if the concrete reinforcing was installed correctly; and, WHEREAS,it was determined that the reinforcing sizing was correct,however,the bottom mat of steel consisting ofNo.6 bars ant 9-inch o.c.in the long direction,and No.4 bars in the short direction had moved up vertically,particularly at the middle of the span; and, WHEREAS, after notification by Neumann Monson, The Weitz Company, contractor, engineered a temporary shoring detail for the stairs and conducted destructive testing(removed a small area of concrete adjacent to one of the cracks)to confirm Terracon's findings; and, WHEREAS,the contractor confirmed Terracon's findings,and at that time,Neumann Monson instructed the contractor to propose possible solutions to resolve the issue; and, WHEREAS, a series of solutions had been discussed, including removing the curtain wall and completely rebuilding the stair,adding supplemental structural steel members to support the stairs,and lastly,to utilize carbon fiber reinforcement; and, WHEREAS,after meeting with representatives of Iowa State University and CyRide,The Weitz Company is proposing the use of fiber reinforced carbon at the bottom of the stairs; and, WHEREAS, the fiber reinforcement is laminated with an epoxy coating to adhere it to the bottom of the stairs, and this reinforcement is designed to provide the same structural design capacity as the bottom mat of reinforcing that moved up vertically in the concrete. NOW,THEREFORE,BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Ames,Iowa,that the stair modification for the Ames Intermodal Facility is hereby approved,thereby authorizing the use of fiber reinforced carbon at the bottom of the stairs.
