HomeMy WebLinkAbout~Master - Downtown Facade Grants RESOLUTION NO. 12-105 RESOLUTION APPROVING DOWNTOWN FACADE GRANTS FOR FY 2011/12, SECOND ROUND FOR THE CITY OF AMES,IOWA WHEREAS,in August 2011,the City Council awarded five Downtown Facade Improvement grants and in September 2011,it approved using funds of this program for structural analysis related to facade improvement projects,leaving about$44,000 in the program budget for the current fiscal year; and, WHEREAS,a second application process has been initiated for this fiscal year,and six grant applications were received by February 1, 2012; and, WHEREAS, staff determined that all six applications qualify for grants and meet the Downtown Design Guidelines with some minor modifications; and, WHEREAS, two owners of businesses and properties on Main Street, along with two City staff,evaluated these grant applications based on the scoring criteria,and the scorers met and agreed on the scores for each project: and, WHEREAS, all of the following projects are planned for implementation this spring and summer: Address Business or Building Name: Amount Requested 121 Main Street Vacant, formerly Pyle Photo $ 15,000 (Design fees) $ 1,000 123 Main Street Sportsman's Lounge $ 15,000 208 5th Street McClanahan Studio $ 10,300 (In Lechner Building) 205 Main Street Vacant, formerly Antique Ames $ 15,000 (Design fees) $ 1,000 301 Main Street StylEyes (in Sheldon-Munn) $ 15,000 203 Main Street Vacant, formerly Antique Ames $ 15,000 (Design fees) $ 1,000 WHEREAS, the $88,300 total of all six grant applications is more than the total funding available in the current fiscal year,however,there are several alternatives for addressing this issue; and, WHEREAS,the City Council will have to decide whether or not to offer grants to a property with multiple store fronts in this second round(203, 205, and 301 Main Street)using money from next year's first-round funds; and, WHEREAS,moving ahead with six more facade projects this year will be a powerful visual statement, which will have a significant, immediate impact on the look of the Downtown; and, WHEREAS, City staff recommends that the grant funding be approved for all of the six projects listed above by advancing the$50,000 appropriated in FY 2012/13 from the Local Options Sales Tax fund, and by adopting this alternative, the Council will be using monies from the next year's first round to fund this year's second round. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Ames, Iowa, that the Downtown Facade Grant funding for the six aforementioned projects is hereby approved, using $50,000 appropriated in FY 2012/13 from the Local Option Sales Tax Fund.
