RESOLUTION APPROVING AGREEMENT WITH AMES HISTORICAL SOCIETY
FOR TRANSFER OF ADAMS ESTATE NET PROCEEDS
FOR THE CITY OF AMES,IOWA
WHEREAS, in 2006,the City Council directed that the revenue generated from the sale of
the Adams property(structures and two acres of land),less any expenses incurred by the City,would
be transferred to the Ames Historical Society for the"purpose of helping to provide a facility for the
archiving of community records and making them available to the public;" and,
WHEREAS,at that time,the Ames Historical Society said that it"would use these resources
for expenses related to acquiring and developing a permanent museum facility" within our
community; and,
WHEREAS,the City deemed that Ms. Adams had demonstrated confidence and support of
the Ames Historical Society since she had bequeathed her possessions to that organization; and,
WHEREAS, it should be noted that, at the City's request, the District Court modified the
terms of the original trust established by Ms. Adams bequest, and that the Court specifically
authorized the City Council to "sell the Adams residence, preserve the architectural and historical
features through Local Historic Landmark designation, and apply the proceeds from the sale for a
public purpose consistent with the Settlor's (Mary Adams) original intention;" and,
WHEREAS, in July 2011, the City sold the Adams property for $145,000, and the City's
expenses totaled $80,009; and,
WHEREAS, staff has developed a contract with the Ames Historical Society to transmit
$64,991 to the Society to"purchase a building for collecting,conserving,and sharing Ames'history
for the benefit of the citizens of Ames."
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Ames, Iowa,
that the Agreement with the Ames Historical Society for the transfer of the Adams Estate Net
Proceeds in the amount of$64,991 is hereby approved.
ADOPTED THIS 22"d day of November, 2011.
