COUNCIL ACTION FORM
SUBJECT: SURFACE WATER AND STORM SEWER EASEMENT ON LOT 6 IN
AMES COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT PARK, SECOND ADDITION
BACKGROUND:
A surface water and storm sewer easement was granted to the City of Ames with the
Final Plat of Ames Community Development Park, Second Addition. The easement
was originally established with 20 feet on each Lot 5 and Lot 6 of the subdivision.
Staff has received a request from the property owner's representative to consider
vacating a portion of the easement. This will enable a more efficient parking lot, as well
as the required landscape screening, to be on-site. Further analysis of the drainage
way and the drainage area indicates that the easement could be reduced to 30 feet in
width with 10 feet on Lot 6 and 20 feet on Lot 5 to the south. Lot 5 was developed in
2002, and currently houses Interpower Corporation.
The surface water and storm sewer easement to be vacated is described as follows:
"The north 10 feet of the south 20 feet of Lot Six (6), Ames Community
Development Park, Second Addition, Ames, Story County, Iowa"
ALTERNATIVES:
1. Vacate the surface water and storm sewer easement on Lot 6 in Ames
Community Development Park, Second Addition.
2. Retain easement as granted.
MANAGER'S RECOMMENDED ACTION:
Further analysis of the drainage way and drainage area indicates that the easement
area can be reduced while still conveying the 100-year storm. Reduction of the
easement width will enable a more efficient parking lot and required landscape
screening to be constructed on this lot.
Therefore, it is the recommendation of the City Manager that the City Council adopt
Alternative No. 1, thereby approving the vacation of the surface water and storm sewer
easement on Lot 6 in Ames Community Development Park, Second Addition.
