RESOLUTION APPROVING USAGE AND FEE WAIVER FOR
ELECTRICITY IN TOM EVANS PLAZA FOR
DOWNTOWN FARMERS' MARKET
FOR THE CITY OF AMES,IOWA
WHEREAS, the Main Street Cultural District(MSCD)is working with the Ames Chamber of
Commerce to host a Saturday Main Street Farmers' Market on Main Street,between Clark Avenue and
Burnett Avenue, this summer; and,
WHEREAS,the plan is for the Market to be in operation from June 25 to September 24 in 2011,
and the hours of operation are scheduled to be from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. each Saturday; and,
WHEREAS, at its March 22, 2011,meeting,the City Council approved the closure of the 400
block of Main Street to accommodate the Market, and the MSCD is further requesting the use of
electricity and waiver of costs in Tom Evans Plaza for the Cultural District's entertainment; and,
WHEREAS,the usage ofthe electricity would occur every Saturday from 6:00 a.m.to 2:00 p.m.,
June 25 to September 24; and,
WHEREAS, City staff is supportive of this new Farmers' Market which is anticipated to bring
many community members to the Cultural District to shop and enjoy the amenities that the District
provides; and,
WHEREAS,however,since the Shrine Bowl Parade and the All American Weekend have annual
events in the Downtown area each summer, the MSCD has been working with representatives of both
to plan alternative routes for their events; and,
WHEREAS, the Council felt that those Saturdays when the Shrine Bowl Parade and All
American Weekend events are held should not be approved until details of the events are worked out;
and,
WHEREAS, the MSCD has worked with the Shrine Bowl coordinators to make sure that the
Parade and Farmers' Market can co-exist together on July 23.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Ames,Iowa,that
the use of Tom Evans Plaza on Saturday,July 23,2011,from 6:00 a.m.until 2:00 p.m.,including usage
and waiver of fee for electricity for the Downtown Farmers' Market, is hereby approved, with the
stipulation that any Market vendor using outlets in the triangular planter wall would still reimburse the
City for the cost of electricity used.
