RESOLUTION APPROVING INCREASE IN PURCHASE ORDER FOR WASTE
DISPOSAL AT BOONE COUNTY LANDFILL
FOR THE CITY OF AMES, IOWA
WHEREAS, the Resource Recovery System includes the Resource Recovery Plant (RRP)
and the closed City of Ames sanitary landfill; and,
WHEREAS,because the City's sanitary landfill was closed in 1992, any waste that cannot
be processed into refuse-derived fuel(RDF)is currently disposed of at the Boone County Landfill;
and,
WHEREAS, this waste is taken to Boone under a five-year agreement,which extends until
June 30, 2012, and the amount budged for the reject disposal in FY 2010/I1 is $637,500; and,
WHEREAS, the RRP regularly sends some incoming material straight to the landfill for
disposal, since it is not suitable for processing through the plant; and,
WHEREAS, an unexpected amount of material that cannot be processed has recently been
sent to Boone due to the imminent closure of the Ames-Story Environmental Landfill; and,
WHEREAS, the RRP, thus, incurred more in disposal costs than was budgeted, and while
this amount is offset by revenue, an increase to the purchase order is required to cover charges
through the end of this fiscal year.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Ames, Iowa,
that authorization to increase the reject disposal purchase order with the Boone County Landfill in
the total amount of$711,575 is hereby approved.
