HomeMy WebLinkAbout~Master - Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant RESOLUTION NO. 11-093 RESOLUTION APPROVING 2010 DEPARTMENT OF JUSTICE EDWARD BYRNE MEMORIAL JUSTICE ASSISTANCE GRANT FOR THE CITY OF AMES,IOWA WHEREAS, last year,,the Police Department applied for and was awarded a Department of Justice Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant(JAG); and, - WHEREAS,this is a reoccurring grant that the Police Department has applied for,been awarded,and participated in for several years; and, WHEREAS,the terms of the grant require that in counties where the sheriff has the only j ail facilities, the award recipient must agree with the county on how grant proceeds will be distributed; and, WHEREAS, the 2010 grant amount was for just over$34,000, and because the Police Department has assumed the responsibility for applying for and administering this grant,this year's agreement allocated all the funds to the Police Department; and, WHEREAS,the grant documents and a Memorandum of Understanding(MOU)with the Sheriff's Office were prepared and on June 22,2010,and City Council approved the application for this grant and the accompanying MOU by Resolution No. 10-307; and, WHEREAS, as has been done in several previous years, the MOU was an agreement between the Sheriff's Office and the Police Department with the Sheriff and the Ames Police Chief signing the documents; and, WHEREAS, the Department of Justice has since changed its grant procedures with regard to the Edward Byrne JAG by indicating that the agreement needs to be between the City and the County; and, WHEREAS,a new MOU has been prepared indicating the agreement is more clearly between the City and the County with the mayor and county supervisors signing the document; and, WHEREAS, the substantive provisions of the MOU have not changed. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Ames, Iowa, that the Memorandum of Understanding between the City of Ames and Story County for disbursements of funds from the 2010 Department of Justice Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant is hereby approved.
