RESOLUTION APPROVING EMERGENCY REPAIRS TO
SANITARY SEWER LINE NEAR S. 5TH STREET
FOR THE CITY OF AMES, IOWA
WHEREAS,an IOWatervolunteer notified the City that his water testing ofSquaw Creek showed
high amounts of bacteria; and,
WHEREAS, after receiving confirmation from the volunteer that the bacteria levels were showing
a consistent pattern, City crews began looking for the source of the problem; and,
WHEREAS, on October 4, 2010, a Skunk River Navy member notified the Citythat he noticed
untreated waste entering the stream through a concrete pipe; and,
WHEREAS,on October 5,2010,the person was able to help the City find the exact location,and
the City found that a 75-foot section of 30-inch sanitary sewer near Squaw Creek was missing; and,
WHEREAS, it appeared that sheet piling placed to protect the sewer failed and allowed the
washout; and,
WHEREAS, City crews plugged the sanitary sewer and are currently pumping to bypass the
missing section of sanitary sewer; and,
WHEREAS, Iowa Code Section 384.103 provides for emergency repair without the delay of
advertising and a public letting after finding of necessity to institute emergency proceedings; and,
WHEREAS, a certificate from a licensed professional engineer, not in the regular employ of the
City, stating that emergency repairs are necessary has been received.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Ames, Iowa,
instituting emergency proceedings and authorizing staff to obtain inform quotes and enter into contracts for
repair or replacement of the 30-inch sanitary sewer line near S. 5th Street and any permanent protection
measures.
ADOPTED THIS 7th day of October, 2010.
