HomeMy WebLinkAbout~Master - Selection of artist for 2010/11 "Art in the Parks" Project RESOLUTION NO. 10-446 RESOLUTION APPROVING SELECTION OF ARTIST FOR 2010/11 PUBLIC ART COMMISSION "ART IN THE PARKS" PROJECT FOR THE CITY OF AMES WHEREAS, the Public Art Commission (PAC) is requesting that the Council approve its proceeding with the selection of the next artist for the PAC's "Art in the Parks"Program; and, WHEREAS, since last year's art installation at Ada Hayden Heritage Park was a success,the PAC would like to build upon that excitement by inviting its next artist to Ames; and, WHEREAS,Peter Irniq is an artist and cultural teacher from Nunavut,Canada,and his passion and expertise about the Inuit culture is expressed through the making of stone landmarks called "inuksuk"; and, WHEREAS, an inuksuk is a stone monument constructed for the purpose of navigation by the Inuit people of northern Canada; and, WHEREAS, the Public Art Commission invited Mr. Irniq to Ames in May 2010, and determined that his artwork would be a great addition to the Ames public art collection; and, WHEREAS, the Parks and Recreation Commission has approved the installation of three inuksuit sculptures in Ames'parks system(Emma McCarthy Lee Park,Ada Hayden Heritage Park,and Brookside Park); and, WHEREAS, the preliminary cost estimate for the proposed project is $15,080, and funding would come from PAC 2009/10 rollover funds, current 2010/11 appropriated funds, and future 2011/2012 with Council approval. NOW,THEREFORE,BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Ames,Iowa,that the selection of Artist Peter Irniq for the 2011/12 Public Art Commission"Art in the Parks"Program is hereby approved.
