HomeMy WebLinkAbout~Master - Temporary increase in Police personnel RESOLUTION NO. 10-361 RESOLUTION APPROVING TEMPORARY INCREASE IN POLICE PERSONNEL FOR THE CITY OF AMES WHEREAS,replacing a police officer is a time intensive process,as officers are required by law to attend and successfully complete the 13-week residential training program at the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy; and, WHEREAS, this training can not occur until the officer has actually been hired by a police department; and, WHEREAS,in addition,Ames police officers complete a 12-week field training experience, and field training is a practical learning experience managed by Ames police trainers that orient new officers to police work at the Ames Police Department; and, WHEREAS, the six-month lag time between hiring new officers and their being able to operate independently in the field has become increasingly important in our ability to maintain a full complement of officers on the street; and, WHEREAS,in the next two years,the department will likely face the retirement of as many as eight senior officers; and, WHEREAS, to address this issue, the department desires to hire new officers as soon as a retirement or resignation date is known, however, to accomplish this, the City Council needs to temporarily increase the authorized staffing level for sworn personnel from 53 to 54. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Ames, Iowa, that authorization of a temporary increase in the staffing level in the Police Department for sworn personnel from 53 to 54 for the balance of the 2010/11 fiscal year is hereby approved.
