RESOLUTION APPROVING STREET CLOSURES FOR
UNION PACIFIC RAILROAD REPAIRS
FOR THE CITY OF AMES
WHEREAS, staff was contacted by the Union Pacific Railroad (UPRR) regarding repair
work that needs to be done to the several crossings in and around the Ames area, and two of the
Ames crossings involve an arterial street, Duff Avenue, and a CyRide route, Clark Avenue; and,
WHEREAS, the Municipal Code requires the City Council to approve temporary street
closures of these types; and,
WHEREAS, the UPRR identified the weeks of May 24 and May 31 as its scheduled time
frame to conduct these surface repairs,and that the repairs would require approximately one to two
days to complete for each location, at which point the crossings will need to be closed to vehicular
traffic; and,
WHEREAS,recent experience with similar coordination efforts has resulted in the need for
flexibility on the part of staff to be able to administratively change the date of the closure as needed;
and,
WHEREAS, it is recommended that the Council delegate to staff the ability to
administratively close the Clark Avenue and Duff Avenue railroad crossings for the purpose of
UPRR conducting the required surface repairs.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Ames, Iowa,
that the delegation of City staff to administratively authorize the closure of Clark Avenue and Duff
Avenue to facilitate Union Pacific Railroad surface repair work is hereby approved.
