RESOLUTION APPROVING REVISIONS TO
PERSONNEL POLICIES AND PROCEDURES MANUAL
FOR THE CITY OF AMES
WHEREAS,the current language regarding Equal Employment Opportunity and Affirmative
Action, Harassment, and Harassment Complaint and Investigation Procedures in Chapter 3 needs
to be amended to address the requirements of Title II of Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act
(GINA); and,
WHEREAS, Title II of GINA prohibits the use of genetic information in employment,
prohibits the intentional acquisition of genetic information about applicants and employees,imposes
strict confidentiality requirements and applies to private and state and local government employers
with 15 or more employees; and,
WHEREAS, genetic information includes information about an individual's genetic tests,
genetic test of a family member, and family medical history; and,
WHEREAS, covered entities in possession of genetic information about applicants or
employees must treat it the same way they treat medical information generally,and the confidential
information must be kept apart from other personnel information in separate medical files.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Ames, Iowa,
that proposed amendments to the City's Personnel Policies and Procedures required by Title II of the
Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act is hereby approved and effective February 1, 2010.
ADOPTED THIS 20h day of January, 2010.
