RESOLUTION APPROVING FUNDING TO CONTINUE
VISTA SALARY AND SUPPORT FOR STREET `N GREET AND ACTION TEAMS
FOR THE CITY OF AMES
WHEREAS, on August 4, 2009, a Community Conversations on Diversity update meeting
was held at the Ames Public Library,and because a number of projects that grow out of the original
Community Conversation are at or near completion,the participants discussed the community impact
made and the needs for the future; and,
WHEREAS,the group discussions also resulted in the identification of the following actions
for the upcoming year: 1) creation of a new advisory board to coordinate the activities of the four
Action Teams (Strengthening Neighborhoods, One Community, Welcome Fest, Education First);
2) pursuit of 501(c)(3) status in order to accept contributions frm businesses, governments, and
individuals;3)continuance of organized conversations and recruitment of under-represented groups
for involvement; 4) support of the AmeZone Youth Group; and, 5)creation of a new name for the
effort,possibly"United Ames;" and,
WHEREAS, the services of a year-long VISTA worker have been secured from the Iowa
Civil Rights Commission, and another VISTA worker will begin work with the City the week of
September 20,2009, and he will continue the work provided by the previous VISTA workers; and,
WHEREAS, the Iowa Civil Rights Commission has requested that the City help finance a
portion of the salary in the amount of$2,000; and,
WHEREAS, in addition, in order for the VISTA worker to be successful in this endeavor,
an additional$3,000 is needed for a computer,office supplies,the Street`N Greet trailer's insurance,
etc., and for the general support for the Action Teams.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Ames, Iowa,
that the request from the Iowa Civil Rights Commission to allocate $5,000 from the 2009/10 FY
Contingency Fund to provide the City's portion of the VISTA worker's salary, support for the
Street 'N Greet, and general assistance for the Action Teams is hereby approved.
